The mainstream health and fitness industry has been programming you to believe something about your body for a long time now. It’s this programmed belief that is at the root of your challenges with your body and the food you put in it…
“Your body can’t be trusted.”
Do you still count calories? Do you track your food? Are you obsessed with macros?
If you’re trying to break away from doing this stuff, are you feeling uncomfortable about that? Do you feel like you’re moving toward a place that feels out of control?
Do you feel like the advice, “eat when you’re hungry and stop when you’re full” is total crap? Or impossible for you, at least?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, it’s likely due to the programming you’ve been subjected to by the mainstream health and fitness industry.
When a trainer tells you to count calories, track macros, or track your food in detail, this is exactly what they’re telling you—that your body is faulty.
Why do I say that?
Because I find it silly that any random trainer, guru, or “expert” in 2016 knows your body better than your body knows itself.
200,000 years. That’s a lot of years. It also happens to be the number of years that homo sapiens have been stumbling around this planet.
That’s a lot of years for the modern human body to dial in its needs and hone its ability to signal the brain for the basic mechanisms of hunger and satiety.
This is what your body does. Survival depends on it. That’s why human beings have been managing food intake just fine for hundreds of thousands of years without spreadsheets, apps, and calculators.
Sure, there are factors that can cause the signaling to be faulty. Primarily, relationship with food/body/self issues and the manipulative nature of processed, hyper-palatable foods. But counting/tracking/weighing strategies don’t fix those issues so there’s still no point in using them.
Counting/tracking/weighing strategies have never been necessary to reach success for any of the men or women I’ve worked with in our Academy. And why would it be necessary? The human brain is a supercomputer of still widely unquantified capability.
How silly is it to insist on one hand that we’re the most brilliant and capable species and to insist on the other that we’re so broken as to not be able to competently navigate one of the most basic survival issues—eating.
Let me simplify this for you. Wolves don’t count calories because they eat food their body was biologically programmed to eat, they move a lot, they sleep enough, and they don’t use the internet until 1am.
How many obese wolves have you seen? What’s the rate of wolves dying from preventable diseases? Is there any other animal on Earth doing to themselves with food and lifestyle what humans are doing?
Oh yeah…the animals who live with humans.
Our bodies aren’t broken—our environment is broken. And I don’t mean environment like deforestation, smog, and the like. I’m talking about your immediate environment. The food you eat, the place you sleep, the relationships you’re in, the stress you’re under, your finances, and so on.
There aren’t many relevant reasons to distrust your body. There’s a lot of reasons to distrust your environment.
Tracking calories from the food you eat says, “my body is broken.” Changing the type and quality of the food you eat says, “my environment is broken.”
Do you see the difference now? And when you make that shift, your body stops being manipulated by the environment and the signals no longer get crossed. That’s ALWAYS the first step.
That, though, is easier said than done isn’t it? It’s easy to say, “eat real food.” It’s hard to actually do it day in and day out. It’s easy to say, “move your body a lot.” It’s hard to make it a practice.
Why? It’s a perfect storm of physical environment challenges andpsychological environment challenges.
When you’re a perfectionist*, you’re over-scheduled*, you had a rough day at work*, you have three kids*, and you’ve been fighting with your spouse*, it’s hard to not eat all the things+.
* These things make up your psychological environment.
+ All the things only exist because of our modern physical environment.
These environment complications are unique to humans. Wolves get stressed, but they don’t have access to Häagen-Dazs.
Going a step further—these complications are unique to the past couple generations of humans. We’re really the pioneers of screwing up our bodies.
A hundred years ago, the over-scheduled perfectionist with the three kids and the pissed off spouse who had a rough day at work couldn’t drive through Chick-fil-A for fast food and a chocolate shake and then rip through a bag of Starbursts while watching Homeland on DVR after sitting at a desk all day.
Our psychological environment is more screwed up than ever before. Stress is totally off the charts. And we’re medicating that stress at record levels.
Our physical environment is like nothing we’ve ever seen. Life is massively convenient and our food supply has been transformed (in not such a good way).
Do you really think these challenges are going to be solved by assigning points to foods, gritting your teeth, and going to war with food and your body?
It’s a terrible strategy. A terrible strategy. To me, it sounds like a strategy designed by people who have zero understanding of the challenges we face. Zero understanding of human psychology. Zero understanding of human nutrition.
So what is the solution?

Move your body in functional ways. Ditch the cardio, excessive exercise, & boring routines. Don’t tear yourself down, build yourself up.

You CAN learn to navigate the current environment. You CAN learn which aspects of the current environment can be changed. You CAN learn to trust your body and listen to your body. You CAN be successful long-term…
But only if you understand the challenges you face and do the authentic work to overcome them (while ignoring the silly strategies put forth by people who simply don’t understand the scope of the struggle).
