Child Advocacy Group Reveals 'Top San Antonio Schools'

Local nonprofit research and advocacy organization Children at Risk announced its “Top 10 Schools in San Antonio” lists on Tuesday at the San Antonio Area Foundation. The lists of high schools, middle schools, elementary schools, and so-called “Gold Ribbon” neighborhood schools include known top performers in the area, surveyed from the six counties around San Antonio.

Seventy-one high schools were ranked according to STAAR scores in reading and math, graduations rates, ACT/SAT scores, and International Baccalaureate and AP participation. Performance indicators adjusted scores to account for economically disadvantaged populations, and growth indicators took into account student improvement on standardized tests from year to year. Houston-based Children at Risk aims to impact child success rates Texas’ education system with in-depth research into child health, safety, education and economic conditions.

Top 10 Public High Schools in San Antonio

1. Health Careers High School (Northside ISD)

2. Young Women’s Leadership Academy (San Antonio ISD)

3. Judson Early College Academy (Judson ISD)

4. Travis Early College High School (San Antonio ISD)

5. Johnson High School (North East ISD)

6. Reagan High School (North East ISD)

7. International School of America (North East ISD)

8. School of Science and Technology (School of Science and Technology)

9. Brandeis High School (Northside ISD)

10. Harmony Science Academy (Harmony Science Academy)

Top Middle Schools in San Antonio

Children at risk also researched and ranked 129 middle schools and 330 elementary schools based on STAAR performance and average reading and math gains and losses. They took into account the percentage of economically disadvantaged students at each school.

2. Young Women’s Leadership Academy (San Antonio ISD)

3. Basis San Antonio Medical Center (Basis Texas)

4. Tejeda Middle School (North East ISD)

5. Bush Middle School (North East ISD)

Top Elementary Schools in San Antonio

1. Hardy Oak Elementary School (North East ISD)

2. Northwood Elementary School (North East ISD)

3. Wilderness Oak Elementary School (North East ISD)

4. Encino Park Elementary School (North East ISD)

5. Blattman Elementary School (Northside ISD)

Gold Ribbon Neighborhood Middle Schools

Children at Risk also awarded Gold Ribbon designation to  middle schools and elementary schools that are neither a charter nor magnet, have a high concentration of economically disadvantaged students, and rank highest on the overall rankings.
