Ice Tastes Weird? It Might Be Your Ice Cube Tray

An ice cube tray filled with ice sits next to two blocks of ice on a wooden cutting board.

Even though most refrigerators come equipped with an ice maker, ice cube trays are an excellent tool for creating yummy-flavored and fun-shaped ice, making your beverage aesthetically pleasing and super tasty.

But have you ever had a glass of your favorite drink, only to be met with weird-tasting ice?

This is a common occurrence, and the answer lies within the cleanliness of your ice cube tray. Many think ice is too cold to harbor harmful bacteria, but that’s not true.

Leanne Stapf, Chief operating officer of the Cleaning Authority, told Martha Stewart that because ice trays are exposed to several foods in your freezer, it can be common for odors to absorb into the ice cubes, which causes them to taste funny.

Plus, bacteria such as E. coli and salmonella can survive in freezing temperatures and, if left unclean, can exist in your ice cube tray.

The good news is bacteria spreading and weird-tasting ice can be prevented with proper cleaning. If making standard, water-based ice cubes, Stapf recommended washing the tray at least once a month. When making coffee or juice ice cubes, cleaning the tray after every use is advised.

Cleaning your tray is simple. If it’s dishwasher safe, pop it in! If not, run it under warm water to rinse off any ice residue. Then, mix two teaspoons of baking soda with half a cup of warm water and scrub the mixture into each section with a cloth. The baking soda not only acts as a natural cleanser but also reduces odors.

Ice cube trays are a fun way to spruce up any drink. Don’t forget to add an insulated metal straw for the perfect ice-cold beverage!
