Is Lemon Water Better For You Than Regular Water?

A woman squeezes lemon into a glass of water.

You’ve probably been to a restaurant where your server asks if you’d like lemon in your water. Maybe you even squeeze a wedge into your water at home because you like the taste. Or, maybe you’ve heard that lemon water is more beneficial than drinking regular water.

Unfortunately, that’s not true. There’s no research that shows any extensive lemon water benefits. However, that doesn’t mean you should stop squeezing!

Both water and lemon, separately, have plenty of health benefits. Water is essential for healthy living. It keeps you hydrated, helps you feel full, boosts your energy, and can give your skin a healthy glow.

While lemon water might not help you lose weight or clear your skin completely, lemons offer 25-30% of your daily dose of Vitamin C, which can boost your immune system and keep you healthy. Vitamin C also boosts collagen production, which is great for your skin.

Plus, squeezing a slice of lemon into your water can make the drink more palatable for some people. If the burst of citrus encourages you to drink more water throughout the day, keep it up.

The only potential drawback to lemon water is its acidity. Most citrus fruits are highly acidic and can eventually wear away tooth enamel. But, water will dilute that acidity quite a bit. As long as you’re not drinking countless glasses each day, your teeth should continue to be clean and healthy.

The bottom line? Lemon water isn’t some kind of super elixir for your health. But, it boosts water’s flavor, and the two components have individual benefits you can enjoy with every glass.
