More Reps or Heavier Weight For Weight Loss? The Tone It Up Girls Give Their Answer

Although we know there isn’t one right way to lose weight, we can’t help but ask what the most effective path to weight loss is. Karena Dawn and Katrina Scott, the fitness gurus behind Tone It Up, an online community that has over 1 million followers on Instagram, have worked with countless women who are trying to get in shape, so they know firsthand what it takes to get the results you want.

I recently had the chance to chat with Karena and Katrina at the Tone It Up Tour in San Francisco, so I asked them what they thought was better for weight loss: more reps or heavier weights? Their answer was pretty simple.

“We like to mix it up,” Katrina told POPSUGAR. “Our daily workout is always different. It’s never a set thing.” In other words, everything has its place, and there’s not necessarily one kind of exercise that’s better than the others. HIIT cardio, strength training, plyometrics, and weightlifting all contribute to healthy weight loss, as long as you’re constantly surprising your body with new movements. “Mixing it up and keeping your body guessing is the best way,” Katrina continued.

She reminded us that “even squatting your own body weight” is a challenge in and of itself, so you don’t have to worry about tacking extra weight on the barbell every single time you go to the gym. Your best results will come when you keep introducing new things for your body to accomplish — and have fun along the way, of course.

If you feel like you don’t know where to start, Karena suggested you simply join the Tone It Up community. “There are thousands of women who want to connect and make friends,” she told POPSUGAR. Every one of them is working toward the same goal: to be fit, healthy, and happy in their own skin. So whenever you need some inspiration, plug into the Tone It Up crew and soak up all the motivation you need for the day.
