Vitamin C smoothie

Hi friends! I’m off to Boston this morning for a fun Reebok event. This post was supposed to go up much earlier, but as I was about to upload, we had a bit of a… situation. One of the engines in the plane malfunctioned and we made an emergency landing in Dallas. It was the first time that’s ever happened to me and let’s hope it was the last. On the way to Dallas, all I could do was watch the precipitation dance on the window and say 14,000 “Hail Mary’”s.

Man, I loathe flying. (Ok, except for when the flight attendants continuously offer you two types of wine, along with hot meals and free movies.)

Now, after diverting and getting my ticket changed, I’m on my way again ? Last time I was in Boston, I was 16 years old and visiting my aunt and uncle with my nana. So, needless to say, it’s been a while and i’m so excited to go back. I’m determined to have some chowder (“chowdah!”) before I leave.

Since the weather in Tucson is changing, I thought today I’d post my favorite Vitamin C smoothie. When it starts to cool down, and the season “ick” makes its rounds, I do everything in my power to fight it. My favorite strategies are to make sure I’m getting enough water, get enough sleep/rest, and eat nutrient-dense foods. I find that increasing Vitamin C helps immensely, too. As much as I adore the Emergen-C packs, I also like to increase my amounts from food. Strawberries and OJ are always a good choice ?

(Some other great sources of vitamin C: kale, red pepper, broccoli and kiwi.)

Since strawberries are officially out of season -the ones from the market have been mushy lately- I like to buy frozen strawberries. Bonus: the keep the smoothie cold and yield a great texture, without having to add ice.

Along with the strawberries, I add some orange juice, soaked goji berries, a splash of lime juice, half a banana and a hefty pinch of cayenne:

(Did you know cayenne is a great anti-flu and cold agent, and also has anti-fungal properties? Perfect for sick season)

and drink.

The citrus is extremely refreshing and I love the spicy kick from the cayenne. Try it, and let me know what you think!

Do you still drink smoothies in cold weather? For me, they have no season… neither does hot chocolate. Both are year-round treats ?

*A very happy Thanksgiving to my Canadian friends! <3
